Washington DC Endodontic Surgery – Apicoectomy
Advanced endodontic care that heals from the root up
When a root canal isn’t enough, we go one step further
Sometimes, even after a successful root canal, an infection can persist near the root tip. When that happens, a specialized procedure called an apicoectomy — or endodontic surgery — may be the best way to save your tooth and protect your oral health.
At Dlight Dental, our Washington DC endodontic surgery–apicoectomy specialists use advanced imaging, microsurgical tools, and biocompatible materials to precisely target and remove infection while preserving healthy tissue. Our goal: stop pain, prevent reinfection, and keep your natural tooth for life.
No referral is needed — schedule a consultation directly with our in-house endodontist today.

What is the process for an apicoectomy?
1. Consultation & Imaging
Your visit begins with a comprehensive exam and 3D CBCT scan to visualize the affected root tip and surrounding bone.
2. Microsurgical Precision
During the procedure, your Washington DC endodontic surgery–apicoectomy specialist gently accesses the tooth root, removes infected tissue, and trims the root tip with high-precision instruments.
3. Sealing the Root
We apply a bioceramic sealant to close the root end, preventing bacteria from reentering.
4. Healing & Restoration
The gum tissue is sutured for healing, and a protective restoration or crown is placed to strengthen the tooth. Most patients experience minimal discomfort and return to normal activities within a day or two.
5. Returning Home
We’ll provide detailed aftercare instructions once your apicoectomy is complete and check in to make sure healing is going to plan.
More frequently asked questions about apicoectomy
What is an apicoectomy?
An apicoectomy is a microsurgical procedure that removes the infected root tip of a tooth and seals the end to prevent reinfection. It’s often recommended when a standard root canal or retreatment can’t fully resolve an infection.
Does an apicoectomy hurt?
Not at all. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia, and sedation options are available for additional comfort. Most patients describe it as easier than a root canal.
How long is the recovery?
Mild swelling or tenderness is normal for a day or two, but most patients resume regular activities quickly. We’ll provide post-op instructions to ensure smooth healing.
Is surgery always necessary?
No. Our endodontist will evaluate whether retreatment, medication, or another conservative approach could work first. Surgery is only recommended when it’s the best long-term solution.
Will I need a crown afterward?
If the tooth doesn’t already have a crown, one may be recommended to protect and strengthen it following surgery.
By far the best dental experience I have ever had. I had a lot of work done here - extraction, implant, cleaning, fillings, etc. and as someone who is usually afraid of the dentist, they made me comfortable.
